Difference Between Shared and Dedicated Web Hosting?

Join for Access to Our Exclusive Web Tools You can even order different IP addresses for each of your websites with shared hosting. The benefits of shared hosting is low cost (average price is around $5 month per website), your own domain name and lots of software options like database, CGI, etc. If you run a small business and dont expect more than 1000 visitors to your website per day, then shared hosting is for you. The only problem with shared hosting is that bandwidth is limited, so if your site becomes very popular you might find yourself running out of bandwidth quickly. If you ever wanted to test the waters and put your own website up on the Internet, start with shared hosting and your own domain its the way to go. What is dedicated hosting? Dedicated hosting is the opposite of shared hosting. Dedicated hosting is about you being in total control of the server and what goes on the server. You decide whether to host 1 site or 10 of your sites. Dedicated hosting allows you to tailor database, email and software applications to your desire so it works the way you want it to. This is powerful. original Difference Between Shared and Dedicated Web Hosting?

Shared-Hosting Perils

If one of the major RBLs (Realtime Blackhole Lists), such as Mail Abuse Prevention System decides to block e-mail from the mail server you share, because some other domain on the same server had been spamming, it won't be your fault, but you'll pay the price all the same. In general, you should consider your site more vulnerable to attacks from other sites in the same data center than from outside. You know how in the movies the bank robbers rent the basement next door and break in at night? If you want to attack an Internet site, maybe even an Internet bank, rent a logically nearby server. There's nothing nearer than another site on a shared server. A dedicated server is a good solution, but even if security is a real concern, you may not be able to afford one. Shop around before you sign up. Look for a shared-hosting service that has some malware protection, like antivirus. If you're keeping personal user information, you should also look for one that supports SSL for your site, not shared with everyone else on your server. This means you'll need your own IP address, so it may cost more. But it's better to pay a little more up front to be sure you're safe. original Shared-Hosting Perils

Wilson HostGator may be represented by a cartoon aligator, but the decade-old company is serious Web-hosting solution for those looking to build a site. HostGator offers three regular Web-hosting package plans: Hatchling, Baby, and Business. These "shared" hosting packages place your site on a server on which other sites also live. The benefit of a shared hosting plan is the low cost in comparison to a dedicated server. The downside is that your site's performance may be affected other site's traffic and usage patterns. Hatchling accounts give you a plot of virtual land starting at $3.96 per month, if you commit to a three-year agreement. For the price you get unlimited disk space, email accounts, bandwidth, and MySQL databases, but you're limited to just one domain. Baby accounts build upon Hatchling accounts by offering unlimited domain and add-on support, private SSL, and a dedicated IP that costs $2.00 extra per month. Baby accounts can be purchased for as little as $6.36 per month. original HostGator.com

The world of website development and online business management is becoming more and more complicated. We have seen many new technologies to come out in the market within the last few years. Some of them have significantly improved the way we manage websites, hosting accounts and online content in general. At the same time every script of application needs a human effort. Despite the advanced hosting automation technologies we use, the online business management and website maintenance takes significant effort, says Martin Andreev, Host Color VP of Operations. When combined with enterprise-grade VMware virtualization, customers have the protection of redundant hardware failover, the simplicity of shared hosting, and can be assured that all customer data will remain in Canada. Traditionally, if you wanted the benefits of virtualization, you had to look at a virtual server or service offering that required technical resources to manage that server. More importantly, many of those same services are located in a country that doesnt allow customers to meet their privacy requirements with their cloud-based data, said Matt McKinney, Director at Canadian Web Hosting. We recognize that security and geography are just as important as the technology. Our plans are tailored specifically for customers looking for the simplicity of a shared hosting environment, and want to utilize the benefits of a cloud environment where features like automatic failover and geographic control are included. Weve recognized from day one that not every customer has the resources to invest in expensive hardware or complicated load-balanced, multi-server configurations. We want to make the benefits of the cloud available to everyone and lower the short- and long-term costs to get access to enterprise-grade cloud hosting services. Canadian Web Hosting's certified support teams can help manage the servers 24/7 and every server that includes cPanel or Plesk with regular backup snapshots to help keep data protected and scalability with unlimited email and storage. In addition, customers get the ability to one-click install many leading applications like Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, MySQL and many more. user avatar Mostly about whether they could configure Magento multi store in the way I wanted it. This was not only to see if they could do it, but also to see how fast they responded, and whether they used a ticket system to log e-mail questions. Never again will I go with a host that cannot be bothered to use a ticket system. I then look up the testimonials on the host to see what sites they are running and how fast they are. I avoid hosts where the testimonial customer has moved away (!). Many Magento hosts have a Magento demo store running to show how fast they can get Magento to run. This is of limited use. If it runs slow then you know to avoid them. If it runs fast then you know nothing, as they could have thrown lots of resources at it, and in any case it is only a few products and no visitors. The only real way of knowing how fast a site will be is to browse a similar site actually running on the hosts servers using the plan you want to purchase. If the host company does not want to provide examples, ask them why. original Shared hosting is best for Magento

This is especially useful for hosts who market services based on unlimited disk space, but want to prevent customers from filling up the hard disks. Hosts that use CloudLinux can get more from their shared hosting servers, says Igor Seletskiy, Founder and CEO at CloudLinux. By allocating specific hardware resources to each account, servers can be filled to maximum capacity without the risk of poor performance. At CloudLinux, we are always finding new ways to help hosting companies take control of their servers, and our new Inode Limits for cPanel provides an alternative way to limit the way storage is used. With CloudLinux, shared hosting accounts are contained in Lightweight Virtual Environments, or LVEs. LVEs can be controlled from a convenient, easy to use interface called LVE Manager, where limits can be set for a wide range of hardware resources. This range now includes inodes. An inode is a data structure that stores useful information about files and folders. Counting the number of inodes in a given partition is an effective way to gauge the number of files and folders currently stored. As a result, setting a per package or per account limit on the number of inodes helps keep customers within their allocated disk space quota. As a way to maintain consistent server performance, inode limits are a welcome addition for CloudLinux and cPanel customers. The inode issue had been bothering us for a long time, says Ivan Rakic, CEO at Servikus LLC. original CloudLinux Releases New Inode Limits for cPanel

Forty-seven percent of all phishing attacks recorded worldwide during the second half of 2012 involved such mass break-ins, APWG said in the latest edition of its Global Phishing Survey report published Thursday. In this type of attack, once phishers break into a shared Web hosting server, they update its configuration so that phishing pages are displayed from a particular subdirectory of every website hosted on the server, APWG said. A single shared hosting server can host dozens, hundreds or even thousands of websites at a time, the organization said. (See also "Google Chrome leads the browser pack at preventing phishing, study finds." ) APWG is a coalition of over 2000 organizations that include security vendors, financial institutions, retailers, ISPs, telecommunication companies, defense contractors, law enforcement agencies, trade groups, government agencies and more. Hacking into shared Web hosting servers and hijacking their domains for phishing purposes is not a new technique, but this type of malicious activity reached a peak in August 2012, when APWG detected over 14,000 phishing attacks sitting on 61 servers. "Levels did decline in late 2012, but still remained troublingly high," APWG said. Phishing jumped in late 2012 During the second half of 2012, there were at least 123,486 unique phishing attacks worldwide that involved 89,748 unique domain names, APWG said. This was a significant increase from the 93,462 phishing attacks and 64,204 associated domains observed by the organization during the first half of 2012. "Of the 89,748 phishing domains, we identified 5835 domain names that we believe were registered maliciously, by phishers," APWG said. "The other 83,913 domains were almost all hacked or compromised on vulnerable Web hosting." In order to break into such servers, attackers exploit vulnerabilities in Web server administration panels like cPanel or Plesk and popular Web applications like WordPress or Joomla. "These attacks highlight the vulnerability of hosting providers and software, exploit weak password management, and provide plenty of reason to worry," the organization said. original Hackers increasingly target shared Web hosting servers for use in mass phishing attacks

They are always the first in line to be served and this makes for a lot faster load time. No penalties- With shared hosting if you use too much of the host's resources (such as CPU, bandwidth, or space) there are penalties you have to pay. This is not the case with dedicated hosting because it all belongs to you. Drawbacks: Price- Price is about the only drawback to dedicated hosting. All the great features and security of dedicated hosting cost a decent amount of money starting anywhere from $75/month to a couple of hundred dollars per month. You have to make sure that dedicated hosting is the right thing for you before you select it. So, what's the conclusion? Well that's really up to you. The majority of people choose to go with shared hosting because it is a lot cheaper. original Shared Hosting Vs. Dedicated Web Hosting
